Steps:

  1. Toolkit change note: Due to the EET missing several bits present in the Pro Tech Go and only being $20 cheaper, the EET has been removed. The EET has everything needed to complete this guide if you already own one, but if you are shopping for a new toolkit to complete this for the first time, the Pro Tech Go or refurbished Pro Tech is the current recommended kit.
  2. Power off your laptop before starting.
  3. Flip the device over so that the vents on the bottom are facing away from you.

  5. Place your finger on the latch located in the center of the laptop.
  6. Slide the latch to the right, applying enough force to reveal a red indicator.
  7. You will hear a soft click when the latch has been disengaged.

  9. Lift the battery by the top, away from the laptop body.

  12. After removing the battery, remove the 2 Phillips #0 screws securing the service panel.
  13. Slide the panel off after removing the screws.

  16. If your E7440 is missing the caddy or bumpers, these parts can be safely omitted if an SSD is installed. If your unit is complete, remove the 4 screws marked in red. These screws are Phillips #0 if your laptop has them.
  17. Pull the tab on the drive cable up to disconnect it from the motherboard.
  18. Deroute the hard drive cable from the system.

  20. If you are removing the cable to complete a different repair, do not use force.
  21. Remove the drive from the machine, and disconnect the cable.

  23. Once the old cable is removed, partially install the replacement cable. Final placement is done with the drive installed.
  24. Reinstall the drive into the laptop, and setup the final cable placement.
