Description: Use this guide to replace the battery on your...

Steps:

  1. Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the rear glass for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.
  2. A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone—the display and internal battery are both susceptible to heat damage.

  4. Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.
  5. If the rear glass is cracked, the suction handle may not stick. Try lifting it with strong tape, or superglue the suction handle in place and allow it to cure so you can proceed.
  6. Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a small gap between the rear glass and the frame.
  7. In case you have trouble creating a gap, apply more heat to further soften the adhesive. Follow the iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.
  8. Insert an opening pick into the gap you created.
  9. Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive.
  10. Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

  12. Insert a second opening pick at the bottom edge of your phone.
  13. Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner to slice the adhesive.
  14. Leave the opening picks in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

  16. If the adhesive becomes hard to cut, it has most likely cooled down. Use your iOpener to reheat it.
  17. Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner of your phone.
  18. Slide the opening pick along the left edge of your phone to slice the adhesive.
  19. Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

  21. Insert a fourth opening pick underneath the top left corner of your phone.
  22. Slide the opening pick along the top edge to slice the adhesive.
  23. Leave the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

  25. Insert a fifth opening pick underneath the top right corner.
  26. Slide the opening pick along the right edge of the rear glass to slice the remaining adhesive.

  28. Remove the rear glass.
  29. Apply new adhesive where necessary after cleaning the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%).
  30. Secure the new rear glass with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape. After installing the rear glass, apply strong, steady pressure to your phone for several minutes to help the adhesive form a good bond—a stack of heavy books works well.

  32. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the ten 3.9 mm-long screws securing the motherboard cover.

  34. Insert the tip of an opening pick underneath the right edge of the motherboard cover.
  35. Slide the opening pick to the top right corner of the motherboard cover to unhinge the plastic clips and pry it up.

  37. Use a pair of tweezers or your fingers to remove the motherboard cover.

  39. Use a spudger to disconnect the battery cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket.

  43. During the following step do not fold the cable sharply and only bend it to avoid cable damage.
  44. Fold the interconnect flex cable towards the charging port in order to get free access to both battery pull tabs.
  45. You might want to use a small piece of tape to temporarily stick the cable onto your working surface to avoid accidentally damaging it during the battery removal.

  47. Take care not to puncture or bend the battery with your tool—a punctured or bent battery may leak dangerous chemicals or cause a thermal event.
  48. Use a pair of blunt nose tweezers or a clean fingernail to peel the orange adhesive strip labeled with an A off the battery.

  51. Grab both pull–tab ends labeled with an A and pull up on the orange adhesive strip to lift the battery out of its recess and swing it up to an upright position.
  52. Although these adhesive tabs are supposed to make the battery removal easier, they may require some force. In case you're having trouble removing the battery, you can apply a heated iOpener to the center of the display to loosen the adhesive underneath.
  53. Peel the battery off the remaining adhesive.
  54. Remove the battery.
  55. Do not reinstall a damaged or deformed battery, as doing so is a potential safety hazard.
  56. During reassembly, temporarily reconnect the battery to the motherboard to help align it correctly. Disconnect the battery after it is seated.

  58. In case you're replacing the adhesive sticker with a new one, peel the battery's adhesive sticker off the midframe and clean the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%). Let the alcohol dry before installing new adhesive.
