Steps:

  1. First, make a time machine backup of the Mac to an external USB disk.
  2. Boot in recovery mode (power + alt) to start from recovery disk.
  3. Then format the new SSD in Disk Utility (erase + first aid).
  4. Shutdown down mac, remove back plate, disconnect battery.
  5. Then install new SSD in M2 enclosure and swap it with old SSD.
  6. Boot in recovery mode (power + alt) to start from recovery disk.
  7. Mount external USB disk from (2).
  8. Finally, restore time machine backup from (2) to new SSD.
