How to Fix Anything
ID: 153228
Description: These are the preliminary steps that are often...
Steps:
- Try to describe what your device is doing and what instead you expect it to do.
- If it is not obvious, check if the behaviour is actually a problem or not.
- Pro tip: even if this is the intended behaviour, you are entitled to modify it, if you like. Just it's not "fixing" anymore: that's hacking!
- Did you forget to put the plug in the socket? Did you check the battery? Is the light bulb burn out?
- In Europe, everything has two years of warranty by law. Do not give up your rights!
- There is a very good chance that you will find something useful with a little search online.
- Speak with friends, family or colleagues. Even if they don't know anything, speaking helps a lot the reasoning.
- Speak to a rubber duck
- Take a minute to think if there is anything that could be a safety hazard.
- Check the user manual and the package, if available, and the device itself for any danger label.
