Steps:
- Before throwing it away and buying another one, try cleaning it on the inside.
- Open the battery compartment. Remove the batteries. You will see a screw. ATTENTION: Do not confuse it with the bottom part. It is not a second screw.
- Next, be very patient while you pry open the device. The credit card method did not work for me. I also did not succeed with the usual plastic tools for opening an iPhone. Nearly desperate, I used a sharp metal screwdriver, with caution.
- As I ran it through the seam, I wondered if the gunk I was removing was contact adhesive. No! The controller is press-fitted and it is strong.
- You should keep in mind that the red protective window for the IR emitter will stay hooked into the bottom casing if you avoid breaking it.
- After prying it open, I noticed I had caused some slight damage in the form of burrs that caused a loss of smoothness to the touch. I used a nail file to sand the burrs and it ended up smooth.
- The parts separate easily. Between the two halves are two rubber mats with the keys and the PCB.
- Note that the red protective window for the IR emitter stays in the lower case.
- I cleaned the housings and key mats with a nail brush and a little bit of warm water with neutral soap. I dried them with a hair dryer.
- I cleaned the PCB with a cotton swab dampened with rubbing alcohol. THIS WAS THE FAULT, AS REMOVING THE DIRT FIXED THE PROBLEM. You can see it on the cotton swab.
- Once again, be patient so you don't break it. I used the reverse order, placing the inverted top case at the bottom and putting the other parts on top in order:
- Carefully seat the rubber mats, ensuring with your fingers that all keys pass through the holes in the top case.
- Then, place the board carefully, noting that the IR emitter remains in its housing.
- Finally, place the bottom case, being careful to correctly seat the battery connection springs.
- I chose to start tightening from the IR emitter end and finish at the battery end. Remember to put the screw back in. And that's it!
