Steps:

  1. Assess the damage to the whisper key. If the bocal is digging into the whisper key pad, gently swivel it away from the whisper key pad.
  2. If the whisper key pad is completely missing, skip to step 4.
  3. Make sure the area around the key pad is clear before proceeding.

  5. Check to make sure the whisper key lock is disengaged. If the whisper key lock is engaged, gently pull back on the tab to release the lock, returning the whisper key to its place.

  7. Remove the bocal while making sure to stay clear of the whisper key.

  9. Take apart the bassoon and place the wing joint on a flat surface.
  10. Make sure the whisper key is facing up.

  12. Take a flat screwdriver and remove the old glue from the key.

  14. If the key pad is still partially attached to the key, use the screwdriver to gently make space between the key and the key pad. Pour a small amount of super glue into this space.
  15. If the whisper key pad has completely come off of the key, place a drop of super glue in the middle of the key. Place a new key pad on top of the glue.

  17. Gently press down on the key pad, ensuring that the glue does not spill out from the sides. If the glue does spill, wipe off the excess with a paper towel.
  18. At this point, the instrument can be played again, but the key pad will not set until the glue has dried.
