Steps:

  1. Unplug the power connector.
  2. Set the steam selector switch to 0.
  3. Plug in the connector.
  4. Press and hold the "Small Coffee" and "Steam" buttons simultaneously.
  5. Turn on the device using the rocker switch on the back.
  6. When the motor starts moving, release both buttons.
  7. More detailed instructions can be found in the ECAM 23.420 Service Manual. The model is very similar to the ECAM 23.120.
  8. Unplug the power connector to exit the test mode.

  9. Fill the tank with water.
  10. Empty the drip tray.

  11. Press the "large coffee" button. The brew unit should move to the upper end position, reverse, then to the lower end position, reverse...
  12. Press the water button. The grinder should start up.
  13. Press the steam button. The pump should start up.
  14. Press the "P" button. The heater should get hot.
  15. Press the "one cup" button. The rear solenoid valve should click audibly.
  16. Press the "coffee beans" button. The lower solenoid valve (if present) should click audibly.
  17. Press the power button. Both solenoid valves should click.
  18. Press the "cappuccino" button (if present). The steam heater should get hot.
