Steps:

1. Turn off the power and water supply to the water heater tank.

2. Drain the water heater tank using a flathead screwdriver (optional but recommended).

3. Locate the sacrificial anode rod, and loosen and remove the old anode rod using the socket wrench.

4. Use the socket wrench to loosen the old sacrificial anode rod, and physically extract it from the tank.
5. To install the new sacrificial anode rod, lower it into the tank and tighten using the socket wrench, securing its place.

6. Close the drain valve and refill the tank (reverse the steps from draining the tank).

7. Turn on the power or gas supply and check for leaks (reverse the steps from turning off the tank).
