DIY Smartphone Flight Simulator 1 - U-Bracket Assembly

Description:

Steps:

  1. DIY smartphone flight simulator 1 - U-Control mounting, a design that I have had sitting idle for almost 8 years for reasons that are not relevant; I started building it when I was working away from home and had a lot of free time, and I have decided to finish it in 2025 and show all the videos.
  2. And the documentation I made in early 2017. I think the system for moving the mobile phone to give movement to the plane, with the support simulating a flight control, is novel; I haven't seen anything like it in any other video or document on the internet until I published this one in March 2025.
  3. (I have only seen something similar made of cardboard in a YouTube video) I hope it serves as inspiration for someone to make their own.

  6. This document contains the photos I took while assembling it between January and March 2017; I am creating a series of documents with the "approximate" step-by-step process of how I assembled it.
  7. ATTENTION: The measurements are not critical; they are for guidance only and you may vary them according to your needs or material availability.

  9. Photos from the "Horn" construction phase. Everything is built with plumbing or electrical PVC pipe, which you can find at hardware stores.

  12. Tube details and approximate measurements. The tubes are assembled and bonded with PVC pipe glue.

  14. Exploded view of the Horn components, which serves as the base of the simulator, made with PVC pipes.

  17. The tubes sometimes have embossed screen printing; I recommend removing it with sandpaper.

  20. Construction of the support board and the control board front, indicative measurements; the photo of the blueprint appears in landscape orientation because iFixit does not allow posting the entire photo in portrait format.

  22. 90º metal reinforcement brackets, slightly bent to approximately 80º.

  25. Blueprint and dimensions of the phone support board, installed on the horn.

  27. Details of the board and how the moving part is made.

  30. Plan with measurements of the wooden support block for the "horn". I am publishing the photo rotated, as iFixit does not accept vertical photos; it crops them.

  33. Measurement of the 18 mm diameter base tube.
  34. Step image Step image Step image
  35. The moving part is made from an L-shaped piece of metal; at the end that rests against the board, it has a screw with a round plastic plug so that it rolls over the board. The nut used is of the self-locking type, so that it does not come loose while rolling.
