Description: The cable going into the Right earmuff tore...
Steps:
- Remove the existing earpad.
- These images are pulled directly from the ATH-M60x user manual.
- Remove 4x Plastic Covers over the screws.
- Be very careful not to puncture or damage the driver in the center of the cup.
- Remove the 4x #000 Philips screws.
- Remove the plastic cover from the assembly. Note: The wire is attached to the piece you remove, so be careful when pulling apart. There was plenty of slack on my pair when I did it.
- When putting it back together, there is an arrow on the front of the driver assembly. This arrow should point "up" towards the band of the headphones.
- If you need to desolder the headphone wire, be very careful with your heat. The wire they use is coated, and there is also some flammable acoustic treatment (white) surrounding the driver.
- Take note of what color goes where.
- Carefully use a fine-chisel or preferred soldering tip to remove the headphone wire from the driver board. Be careful not to melt the coating on the wire, damage the solder pad, or burn the white acoustic filler material. My soldering iron was set to ~650°F (343°C).
- If you need to remove the wire, the wire is tied into an overhand knot for strain relief at the entrance to the cup. I used tweezers to gently pull the knot apart. Be careful the exposed wire does not catch on any of the edges of the plastic. Especially the tips with solder still on them.
