Steps:
- Open the washer lid and press straight down on the agitator or washplate with firm force.
- Release pressure and watch whether the tub quickly centers without bouncing.
- Rock the tub left and right to check for excessive side-to-side play.
- If the tub oscillates or takes time to settle the suspension rods are worn and need replacement.
- Lay out a suspension rod kit labeled W10189077 or W10820048 that matches your model.
- Keep a quarter-inch nut driver or multi-bit screwdriver within reach.
- Put on a single rubber-grip glove to improve your hold on the rods.
- Set masking tape nearby to secure the washer lid during service.
- Have a putty knife ready if your model uses front clips instead of rear screws.
- Place a plastic flathead screwdriver close by for swapping the upper plastic cups.
- Remove the two rear screws beside each hinge on the washer top panel with the nut driver.
- Remove the single screw that secures the power-cord cover plate.
- Stand at the front, pull the top panel toward you about two inches, lift upward, then push it back to disengage it from the rear bracket.
- If your Bravos, Cabrio, or similar model lacks rear screws slide a putty knife under the front edge and depress the clips to release the top.
- Lower the released top panel against a wall or other support so it rests open.
- Run masking tape between the lid and the top panel to stop the lid from flopping and damaging the control console.
- Reach inside the cabinet with the gloved hand and lift the first suspension rod upward to unload its weight.
- Rotate the plastic retainer about 90 degrees then slide it out of the housing.
- Gently lower the rod back inside the tub so it hangs free.
- Tilt the washer slightly onto its side to expose the rod ends beneath the chassis.
- Pull the rod downward through both chassis holes and remove it from the machine.
- Wiggle the shepherd’s hook free whenever it sticks to avoid bending the metal.
- Laying the washer fully on its side makes removal easier but can spill leftover water onto the floor.
- Feed the new suspension rod upward through the same two chassis holes.
- Rest the lower spring against the lip of the washer frame to keep the rod in place while uprighting the machine.
- Return the washer to an upright position while watching that the rod stays seated.
- Use the plastic screwdriver to pop the old plastic cup from the top mount and install the new cup supplied with the rod kit.
- Lift the washer tub with the gloved hand and seat the rod’s shepherd’s hook into the new cup at the required 180-degree angle.
- Press until the hook snaps fully into the cup so the tub hangs freely.
- Lay the washer on its side again if you cannot raise the rod high enough against the tub resistance.
- Repeat the removal and installation process for the remaining three suspension rods one corner at a time.
- Limited workspace may only allow one rod swap per tilt of the machine.
- Swapping all four rods usually takes less than twenty minutes after the first corner is complete.
- Confirm that every rod uses matching plastic bushings from the same kit.
- Verify that the washer tub sits level inside the cabinet; an uneven tub will cause severe vibration during spin.
- Refit the top panel by reversing the removal motion and reinstalling the rear screws or snapping the front clips.
- Press down on the agitator again to ensure the tub returns to center without bounce.
- Rock the tub side to side to confirm minimal play.
- Run a wash cycle and observe that the machine no longer walks or makes loud banging sounds.
