Steps:
- Run the pump out or drain program if the washer is full of water and still powered.
- Don't force the door open while the drum is full of water or the door is locked.
- Switch the washer off at the power supply and unplug it before touching the filter, hoses, or pipework.
- Turn the cold water feed tap 90 degrees to shut off the water supply.
- Shut off the property power supply stopcock if you can't find the washer's cold water feed tap.
- Only shut off an outside stopcock if it supplies your property alone.
- Wear rubber gloves when handling dirty drain water, sludge, or sharp debris.
- Remove wet clothes if the door opens, and use a sponge to move leftover drum water into a sink or bucket.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the lower front cover at the bottom of the washer.
- Pull the washer out slightly while keeping the rear hoses and pipework slack.
- Get help if the washer feels too heavy or unstable to move safely.
- Tilt the washer backward and set a bowl under the drainage filter.
- If a small drainage hose sits beside the filter, remove its cap and drain the water into a tray or bowl.
- Keep the bowl under the filter if there is no small drainage hose, because water will come out when the filter opens.
- Turn the drainage filter anti-clockwise to loosen it.
- If the filter is stuck, tighten it slightly and loosen it again to free trapped debris.
- Use pliers only if necessary, and grip gently because the plastic filter can crack.
- Catch the draining water in the bowl or tray.
- Remove coins, face masks, hair clips, and other debris from the filter.
- Tilt the washer forward a little to drain more water from the filter opening.
- Look inside the filter opening and find the impeller at the back.
- Remove hidden objects blocking the impeller, such as hair clips.
- Watch for sharp debris inside the pump opening.
- Spin the impeller with a finger and make sure it turns freely.
- Use a brush to scrub inside the filter opening and remove sludge.
- Scrub the drainage filter with hot, soapy water.
- Remove sludge and mold from the filter.
- Clean the dispenser drawer if it is dirty.
- Confirm the impeller still spins freely after cleaning.
- Line up the drainage filter with its housing.
- Turn the filter clockwise until it locks into position.
- Stop when the filter handle sits in the vertical position.
- Make sure the filter is fully seated to prevent leaks.
- Press the lower front cover back into place.
- Set the washer upright and push it back without kinking the hoses.
- Plug the washer back in and switch it on.
- Turn the cold water feed tap 90 degrees back on.
- Run an empty 90 °C wash or drum clean program with no clothes inside.
- Add washing machine cleaner if available.
- The cleaning cycle flushes the drainage system and helps freshen the washer.
- Unplug the washer and turn the cold water feed off again if the washer still won't drain.
- Find whether the washer uses a standpipe drain or an under-sink drain connection.
- A standpipe setup has the washer drain hose sitting in the top of a large vertical pipe with a U-bend.
- An under-sink setup has the washer drain hose connected to the sink waste pipework.
- Keep a bowl or bucket ready because stale water may spill and smell.
- Pull the washer drain hose out of the standpipe.
- Lower the hose into a bowl or bucket to drain trapped water.
- Clean sludge from the outside of the hose end.
- Use a mobile phone in video mode with the flashlight on to record down the standpipe.
- Review the footage for clear water at the bottom or a sludge blockage.
- Place a small tray under the U-bend.
- Unscrew the tighteners on the U-bend.
- Keep the tray under the joint because water may drain out and smell.
- Remove the tube and empty the water into a sink.
- Clean out any sludge inside the tube or U-bend.
- Reinstall the tube and tighten the U-bend connections.
- Put the washer drain hose back into the standpipe before running a program, or the washer will drain onto the floor.
- Don't push the hose all the way to the bottom of the standpipe.
- Remove the clip holding the washer drain hose to the under-sink connection, if a clip is fitted.
- Pull the drain hose off the connection.
- Empty the hose into a bowl or bucket.
- Check the hose for sludge or a blockage.
- Unscrew the under-sink U-bend pipework and look inside for sludge.
- Clean out any sludge from the U-bend.
- Reinstall the pipework, reconnect the hose, and refit the clip.
- Plug the washer back in and switch it on.
- Turn the cold water feed tap 90 degrees back on.
- Run an empty 90 °C wash or drum clean program with washing machine cleaner if available.
- Check the filter, drain hose, and pipework for leaks during the test.
- If the washer still won't drain and access is safe, check the outside drainage and manhole covers on the property for blockages.
- Don't lift shared or unsafe covers, and don't enter a drain or manhole.
- Arrange a CCTV drainage survey and drain cleaning if the property drains are blocked.
- If the property drains are clear, the washer may have a faulty drain pump or control board.
- Call a washing machine service technician for drain pump or control board faults.
- Call a plumber for blocked drainage pipework beyond the washer.
- When a wash program ends, leave the drum door and dispenser drawer slightly ajar.
- Ventilation helps stop smells building inside the washer.
