Steps:
- Details of model number
- Remove metal handle. Be careful not to crack the plastic. If necessary hammer the metal ends flat or cut them off with a metal saw.
- With the marker pen draw a line around the circumference of the bin about 3 cm down from the outer lip.
- With a fine handsaw (japanese pulling wood saw or similar), using the extruding lip as a guide, cut off the top edge of the bin. File and/or sand smooth. This step is essential to reduce the height of the bin when it sits inside the metal rings. Otherwise the metal top will not fit snuggly.
- Cut off the top of bin around the marker line. File and/or sand the edges.
- Draw another line vertically and cut the ring. File/sand edges.
- Optional. File/sand down the thicker handle support tabs on the inside of the bin. These are 1-2mm thicker and found where the handle holes are. Doing this step will keep the plastic in constant contact when gluing.
- From the outside of the new bin slide the old bin top up until the top fits snuggly against the lip of the new bin. Check for fit, remove and refile/sand any areas as necessary.
- Clamp in place
- Draw a line around the new bin at the bottom edge of the old bin.
- Drill 2-3mm holes through the existing handle holes.
- Add 2 extra holes at 90 degrees to the existing holes. You will now have 4 holes at 4 compass points.
- Insert the 4 bolts 3-4mm. The bolts should have as flat a head as possible. For example a smooth shallow dome shape without any flat edges.
- The bolts only need to be about 1cm long but for the next step use a longer bolt of the same size/sheoe or use long b9kts and then cut them short.
- With a pair of pliers hold the bolt firmly on the inside of the bin as you heat the head of the bolt with the lighter on the outside. After 10 to 15 seconds pull the bolt back from the inside so the heated head melts into the surface plastic of the old bin.
- Make sure not to pull it all the way through. You only want to make a recess for the bolt head to sit in. After the initial melt as the metal cooks down keep popping the bolt in and out to avoid it bonding with the plastic and to smooth out the recess.
