  5. Insert the iFixit pick into the seam along the edge of the controller and slide it around to release the clips holding it together.
  6. Leave opening picks in the space to keep the top and bottom case from reattaching.
  7. Use an iFixit tool to carefully pry around the edges of the controller.
  8. Once loosened, gently separate the top and bottom of the controller.
  9. Do not separate the top and bottom sections, as they are still connected by a ribbon cable.

  11. Use a spudger to gently push up on alternating sides of the black plastic tab until it clicks up into its unlocked position.
  12. Don't push the tab too hard or too far, otherwise it may come completely off the connector.
  13. Use tweezers to gently pull the cable out of its socket.
  14. The cable should be able to slide in and out of the socket with little to no force. If you feel resistance, the tab may not be fully unlocked.
  15. During reassembly, insert the cable into its socket and use the flat end of a spudger to push the tab down into its locked position.
  16. Separate the top and bottom casing of the controller.
  17. If you feel resistance, check for any cables still connecting the two halves and avoid forcing them apart.
