Steps:

  1. Unplug the stove before touching any internal parts.
  2. Let the oven cool completely if it was used recently.
  3. Move the stove only as much as needed to reach the rear wiring later in the repair.
  4. Open the oven door and find the locking tab on each hinge.
  5. Pull both hinge tabs down until they stop.
  6. Close the door slowly until it rests against the lowered hinge tabs.
  7. Support the door with both hands, lift it straight up, and pull it away from the stove.
  8. Set the door on a stable surface where it cannot fall.
  9. Slide each oven rack toward you.
  10. Lift the front of the rack when it reaches the stop.
  11. Pull each rack out of the oven cavity.
  12. Set the racks aside.
  13. Locate the bottom panel that covers the bake element.
  14. Remove the two Phillips screws, one on each side of the panel.
  15. Each side uses a screw and a washer, so keep each washer with its screw.
  16. The original panel screws may have flatter heads than common replacements.
  17. If the panel screws are rusted or damaged, replace them with 8-32 screws.
  18. Insert a flathead screwdriver into one of the screw holes.
  19. Lift the back edge of the bottom panel with the screwdriver.
  20. Grab both sides of the panel and raise the rear edge.
  21. Pull the front edge out from under the front lip.
  22. Remove the bottom panel from the oven.
  23. Locate the four screws securing the bake element.
  24. These four bake-element screws use 1/4 inch heads.
  25. Remove the two front screws with a 1/4 inch nut driver.
  26. Remove the two rear screws with a 1/4 inch nut driver.
  27. Keep all four screws together for reassembly.
  28. Move to the back of the stove where the bake-element terminals are accessible.
  29. Disconnect the orange wire from one bake-element terminal.
  30. Disconnect the yellow wire from the other terminal.
  31. Pull on the connectors, not the wire itself, so you do not damage the harness.
  32. Disconnecting the wires from the rear is usually easier than pulling them through the front holes.
  33. Return to the oven cavity.
  34. Pull the bake element straight out of the oven.
  35. Remove the old bake element from the stove.
  36. Set the replacement bake element into the oven cavity.
  37. Guide the rear terminals through the holes at the back of the oven.
  38. Reconnect the yellow and orange wires to the bake-element terminals from the rear of the stove.
  39. Make sure both connectors are fully seated before you cover the element again.
  40. Reinstall the four bake-element screws with a 1/4 inch nut driver.
  41. Install two screws at the front and two at the rear.
  42. Make sure the element sits flat in its original position under the oven floor.
  43. Slide the front edge of the bottom panel under the front lip of the oven.
  44. Lower the back edge into place.
  45. Install a washer and Phillips screw on each side of the bottom panel.
  46. Tighten the two panel screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  47. Use 8-32 screws if the originals were replaced.
  48. Slide the oven racks back onto their supports.
  49. Support the oven door with both hands while you align the hinges.
  50. Insert the door hinges into their slots.
  51. Open the door fully and push both hinge tabs back up.
  52. Close the door and confirm that it moves normally.
  53. Reinstall any rear access panel you removed during the repair.
  54. Plug the stove back in.
  55. Set the oven to Bake and confirm that the lower element begins heating.
  56. Keep your hands away from the heating elements during the test.
  57. If the oven stays cold, unplug the stove and verify that the yellow and orange wires are fully connected before continuing diagnosis.
