Steps:

  1. Unplug the dryer before opening the cabinet.
  2. Let the dryer cool completely if it was recently running.
  3. Work on a dry, stable floor and keep the removed screws organized by location.
  4. This guide was written for model MDE 9316AYW, and similar Maytag dryers may differ slightly.
  5. Remove the two front-panel screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  6. Set the screws aside so they return to the same locations during reassembly.
  7. Support the door with one hand.
  8. Remove the hinge screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  9. Lift the door up and away from the dryer.
  10. Set the door aside where it will not get bent or scratched.
  11. Pull the top edge of the front panel away from the dryer.
  12. Lift the panel upward to unhook the bottom edge from the lower clips.
  13. Remove the front panel and set it aside.
  14. Remove the screws from the left and right brackets with a 5/16 inch nut driver or Phillips screwdriver.
  15. Rotate each bracket outward to free the hooked end.
  16. Pull each bracket downward and remove it.
  17. These hooked brackets hold the upper front of the cabinet down against the dryer body.
  18. Lift the dryer top upward.
  19. Support the top while it is raised so it cannot fall or pinch your fingers.
  20. Inspect the belt around the drum for damage or a complete break.
  21. This opening lets you confirm belt condition before removing more parts.
  22. Locate the two sets of screws in the front framing piece.
  23. Remove only the Phillips-head screws with a Phillips screwdriver or 5/16 inch nut driver.
  24. Remove the upper and lower Phillips-head screws on both sides of the frame.
  25. Leave the shiny screws in place until you are ready to remove the lint-filter assembly.
  26. Remove the two screws that fasten the front framing piece to the lint-filter assembly with a 1/4 inch nut driver or socket.
  27. Pull the front framing piece away from the dryer.
  28. Set it down carefully so you do not strain the door-switch or drum-light wiring.
  29. This opening gives you access to the door switch for testing.
  30. If the drum light does not work, check whether power reaches the light socket.
  31. If power reaches the socket, the light bulb may be failed.
  32. Restore power only for live testing, then unplug the dryer again before touching internal parts.
  33. Remove the shiny screws from the lint-filter assembly and tub-support frame with a 5/16 inch nut driver or socket.
  34. Lift out the lint-filter assembly and the frame that supports the tub.
  35. Remove these parts when you need access for a belt replacement.
  36. Clean lint from the exposed cabinet, lint-filter area, and blower area.
  37. Heavy lint buildup can make the dryer take longer to dry clothes.
  38. Inspect the blower-wheel area for obstructions if the blower will not turn freely.
  39. Use the exposed access points to test or replace the heater and thermostats as needed.
  40. This level of disassembly also provides the access needed for a broken-belt repair.
  41. Reassemble the dryer in reverse order and return every bracket, clip, and screw to its original location.
