Turbo Touch 360 by Triax for Nintendo Entertainment System Teardown
ID: 237961
Description: This is a teardown of the Triax controller...
Steps:
- Use a Philips 00 screwdriver to remove the six screws on the back of the controller.
- The top two screws are smaller than the other four outside screws, and a narrow extension bit may be required to reach them.
- Grab the top and bottom of the back shell and pull it off of the front piece.
- All six action buttons will remain on the front shell. The membranes of the A, B and turbo buttons should remain on the buttons, while the Start and Select membranes will rest on the circuit board attached to the back shell.
- The orange D-Pad cover may stick to the board inside the back shell, but it may also rest on the posts on the front shell.
- The controller logic board is comprised of three main pieces:
- 1. a small green circuit board interfacing the face buttons and turbo switches,
- 2. a larger green circuit board underneath handling all the logic from the face buttons and D-Pad and feeding it to the shift register to output to the Nintendo console, and
- 3. a plastic piece comprising of four metal regions, representing the contact points for the D-Pad.
- Use a Philips 00 screwdriver to remove the four screws securing the smaller circuit board to the controller. These screws are different than the ones holding the outer shell together.
- There is one more Phillips screw hidden under the left side of the D-Pad still holding the larger green circuit board in place. Use a narrow or angled extension to unscrew before removing all boards from the controller.
- The larger circuit board is secured by two (2) Phillips 00 screws on the top and bottom.
- Remember to remove the third screw under the left side of the D-pad.
- Grab the smaller circuit board by the right corners, and lift it up and over.
- Several microchips and components are on the board:
- CD4021BE - H 9149: This is a CMOS 8‑stage static shift registers, responsible for handling parallel inputs from the controller and shift them out serially to the video game console.
- SN74HC32N: quad 2‑input OR‑gate SN74HC02N: quad 2‑input NOR‑gate SN74HC04N: hex inverter SN74HC14N: hex Schmitt‑trigger inverter M74HC75BI: Quad Bistable latch
- There are four potentiometers on the top of the board lined from top to bottom. These adjust the capacitance for each of the cardinal directions and therefore the sensitivity of the touch pad, and they can be adjusted with a precision Phillips-head screwdriver.
- LM339N: Quad Voltage Comparator
