Steps:

  1. Place a can over the hole.
  2. The can should completely cover the hole.

  4. Press down firmly on the can.
  5. Cut around the can with a utility knife.
  6. Utility knives are sharp, so handle with care.
  7. Only cut through the carpet. Do not cut through the carpet pad underneath.

  10. Lift out the old carpet.

  12. Flip sample carpet onto its back and place down on a stable surface.
  13. Place the can onto the sample carpet.
  14. Trace the shape of the can with a marker.

  16. Remove the can from the sample carpet.
  17. Cut out the shape from the sample carpet using scissors.
  18. Kitchen scissors are sharp. Always cut away from yourself.

  20. Check to make sure the replacement piece of carpet fits into the hole.
  21. If necessary, trim sample to fit or cut another piece.

  23. Evenly spread glue on the underside of the replacement carpet.
  24. The carpet should be placed down before the glue dries.

  26. Place the glue side of the carpet down into the hole.
  27. Press down firmly on the carpet with your hand.

  30. Trim carpet fibers to blend the replacement carpet with the original.
