Steps:

  1. Start by removing the detachable chuck and the battery.
  2. Unscrew the 7 screws (PH2 head) holding the enclosure together. They have two different lengths, so keep track which screw goes where.

  3. There are two metal clips near the battery compartment. They can be pulled out with a small flathead screwdriver.

  4. Carefully lift the top half of the enclosure off. It should come off cleanly while all the electronics stay in the bottom half.

  5. If your problem is like mine, the gear selector will move smoothly again as soon as the enclosure is open.
  6. If the gear selector now moves, you don't need to do a full disassembly. The steps below are just in case, as I did look deeper to see if I could find a problem in there.
  7. If you need to remove the red gear selector knob, be careful not to lose the two small springs.
  8. If you need to remove the moment adjustment wheel, make note of its orientation. There is no need to unscrew the moment selector spring even if you want to open the gearbox.
  9. Inside you would find a pretty typical planetary gear setup. The grease looks surprisingly crusty considering the manufacturing date is just 6 months prior. I did not find any problems inside the gearbox.

  10. The stuck gear selector appears to be caused entirely by some small burrs on the plastic molding.
  11. Use a sharp knife to trim the plastic where it interferes with the movement of the knob. In my case it was the two indicated areas on the top half.

  12. Make sure the motor wires are neatly tucked away so that they don't get pinched by the enclosure.
  13. Press the enclosure halves together and verify that the gear selector switch now moves freely, with a nice snap action.
  14. Reinsert all the screws. As always with plastic enclosures, try to get the screws to go into the old threads. It helps to spin the screw backwards until it drops into the old groove. Doing this avoids weakening the plastic.
  15. Reinsert the two metal clips.
