Steps:

  1. Turn off the stove and let the cooktop, oven, and door-lock area cool completely.
  2. Unplug the stove or switch off the breaker before touching wiring, removing panels, or using continuity mode.
  3. The live-voltage test can expose 120 V AC, so have a qualified technician do it if you are not comfortable around energized appliances.
  4. Restore power only for the AC-voltage measurement, and keep your fingers on the insulated parts of the probes.
  5. Remove only the access panel needed to reach the door-lock motor.
  6. This guide uses a Whirlpool electric stove; related ranges may place the same parts in different spots.
  7. Locate the door-lock motor near the latch linkage.
  8. Locate the latch bar that runs from the motor to the latch mechanism at the front of the stove.
  9. Locate the front door switch where the oven door presses against the stove frame.
  10. Locate the micro switch on the door-lock motor cam assembly.
  11. On this Whirlpool stove, the micro switch uses two blue wires to report the latch position to the control board.
  12. Pressing Clean and Start begins the lock cycle for self-clean.
  13. The door-lock motor turns the latch bar, and the bar slides the actuator over to hook the oven door.

  28. If the motor gets voltage but does not move the latch, inspect the lock motor, latch bar, and latch mechanism for failure or binding.
  29. If no voltage reaches the motor, test the door switch and micro switch before focusing on the control-board relays or wiring.
  30. Disconnect power again before moving meter leads or touching the lock assembly.
  31. Use the oven light to check the front door switch only if the light bulb works.
  32. Press the door switch in by hand.
  33. If the oven light goes out, the door switch is working and is probably not the lock problem.
  34. If the switch is not pressed in, or if the switch is bad, the stove thinks the door is open and will not lock.
  35. If the light stays on while the switch is pressed, inspect the switch, its actuator, and its wiring.
  36. Disconnect power to the stove before testing the micro switch.
  37. Attach the meter leads to the two leads coming off the micro switch.
  38. Set the meter to continuity or beep mode.
  39. Use a flathead screwdriver to press the small button on the micro switch.
  40. A beep or complete circuit while the button is pressed means the micro switch is good.
  41. No beep while the button is pressed means the micro switch or its wiring needs further repair.
  42. The switch must change state when pressed so the control board can confirm the latch position.
  43. Use the test results to match the F5 error code or self-clean lock failure to the failed area.
  44. A failed door switch can prevent self-clean because the stove reads the door as open.
  45. A failed micro switch can stop the control board from confirming the locked or unlocked latch position.
  46. A failed lock motor or bound latch linkage can keep the actuator from hooking the door even when power reaches the motor.
  47. No power at the lock motor points to the door-switch circuit, micro-switch circuit, wiring, or control-board relays.
  48. Return all wires to their original locations and reinstall any access panels before using the stove.
