Steps:

  1. Power off the phone and disconnect all cables and accessories.
  2. Discharge the battery below 25% if you plan to remove it.
  3. Insert a SIM eject tool into the SIM tray hole and remove the SIM tray.
  4. Inspect the rubber gasket around the SIM tray opening and set the tray aside.
  5. Opening the phone can reduce water and dust resistance, even if you install new adhesive.
  6. Heat the back plate with a hairdryer or heat gun to soften the adhesive underneath.
  7. Use the lowest heat that softens the adhesive, and keep the heat source moving.
  8. A hairdryer is safer than a heat gun because it is less likely to overheat internal components.
  9. Use a plastic pry tool to open a gap at the edge of the back plate.
  10. Work the plastic pry tool around the back plate until the adhesive releases, and lift the back plate away.
  11. Glass can crack if it is bent too far, so reheat stubborn areas instead of forcing the tool.
  12. Heat only the glass camera lens cover you want to replace.
  13. Use a plastic pry tool to gently pry the lens cover off the back plate.
  14. Remove and replace a camera lens cover without disassembling the phone.
  15. Reheat the lens cover if the adhesive resists, and avoid levering against the painted back plate.
  16. Install the replacement lens cover in the same position over the camera opening.
  17. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the 16 screws from the inner frame.
  18. Take reference photos and store the screws in a labeled pattern.
  19. Lift off the top plastic cover.
  20. The top cover includes a light gray antenna line, the NFC antenna, graphite film, and the earpiece speaker on the underside.
  21. Lift out the bottom speaker assembly.
  22. The vibrator motor is built into the bottom speaker assembly housing.
  23. Disconnect the battery cable before unplugging any other connectors.
  24. Use a plastic pry tool to pop the remaining flex cable connectors straight up from their sockets.
  25. Do not pry under the socket or pull on a cable, because the connector can tear off the board.
  26. Identify the wide flex cable that connects the main board to the subboard and the screen cable.
  27. Identify the second flex cable that connects the subboard to the main board.
  28. This second flex cable replaces the thin side coaxial antenna cable used on older models.
  29. For a screen repair, remove the back plate, the bottom speaker assembly screws, and the bottom speaker assembly.
  30. Disconnect the flex cable that joins the screen cable to the main board.
  31. Peel the screen flex cable off the frame.
  32. Heat the front of the phone to soften the screen adhesive.
  33. Use a plastic pry tool to pry the old screen off the frame.
  34. Apply new screen adhesive and install the replacement screen.
  35. Route the replacement screen flex cable through the mid-frame opening before sealing the screen.
  36. Too much heat can damage the display, battery, or frame adhesives, so heat only until the adhesive softens.
  37. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw securing the main board.
  38. Use a plastic pry tool to pop the camera connectors off the main board.
  39. Lift the main board only after all visible connectors are free.
  40. The rear cameras are a 12 megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 50 megapixel primary lens, and a 5 megapixel macro lens.
  41. The 50 megapixel primary lens is the only rear camera with optical image stabilization.
  42. The LED flash and secondary microphone are at the top corner of the main board.
  43. The ambient light sensor and 12 megapixel front-facing camera are on the other side of the main board.
  44. The other two camera connectors are also on the other side of the main board.
  45. Peel the graphite pad on the back shield only if you need access to the chips underneath.
  46. Keep the graphite pad flat and clean so it can continue transferring heat.
  47. The thermal pads sit on top of the chips and the processor.
  48. Put every thermal pad back in its original position during reassembly.
  49. Missing or misplaced thermal pads can cause overheating or poor performance.
  50. Use the built-in pull pouch to pry the battery from the frame.
  51. Follow the arrows printed on the pouch and pull each tab in the indicated direction.
  52. Do not use metal tools to pry against the battery.
  53. Stop if the battery bends, punctures, smokes, smells sweet, or gets hot.
  54. The battery is rated at 5,000 mAh.
  55. Peel the pull pouch off the frame after the battery is removed.
  56. The copper vapor chamber runs under the battery and motherboard.
  57. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the subboard.
  58. Lift the subboard, also called the charger port board, from the frame.
  59. The primary microphone is on the charger port board.
  60. The charger port has a rubber gasket around it.
  61. The SIM reader is on the other side of the charger port board.
  62. Make sure the charger port gasket stays seated during reassembly.
  63. Heat the fingerprint reader area to soften the adhesive holding it to the frame.
  64. Use a plastic pry tool to gently pry the fingerprint reader off the frame.
  65. Use low heat and light pressure so you do not tear the sensor flex cable.
  66. Peel the volume and power button flex cable off the frame.
  67. Pull the metal bracket out from inside the sleeve of the frame.
  68. Pull the button flex cable out of the frame.
  69. Pull the side buttons out of the frame, if you need to replace them.
  70. Check the rubber gasket and mesh filter at the speaker opening in the frame.
  71. Check the microphone holes before reassembly.
  72. The filters and microphones sit above their holes, so a SIM eject tool inserted into the wrong hole should not damage them.
  73. Do not use this protection as a cleaning method, because forcing tools into holes can damage mesh or gaskets.
  74. Reinstall the parts in the reverse order, and use reference photos to confirm cable routing.
  75. Reconnect the flex cables, and press each connector straight down until it snaps into place.
  76. Reconnect the battery after the other internal cables are seated.
  77. Reinstall the bottom speaker assembly, top plastic cover, and 16 Phillips screws.
  78. Use fresh battery adhesive if you installed a replacement battery.
  79. Clean old adhesive residue with adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol, and do not let liquid pool near connectors.
  80. Apply new back cover adhesive to the frame, and press the back cover onto the frame.
  81. Power on the phone and test charging, cameras, speakers, buttons, fingerprint reading, and the display.
  82. If the phone does not power on, reopen it and reseat the battery cable and main flex cables.
  83. If the display stays dark or touch does not work, reseat the screen flex cable and check that it passes through the mid-frame opening.
  84. If charging, USB, microphone, or SIM functions fail, reseat the charger port board and inspect its gasket.
  85. If the speaker or vibration does not work, reseat the bottom speaker assembly.
  86. If a camera does not work, reseat the camera connector on the main board.
  87. If the back cover lifts, remove it and install fresh back cover adhesive.
